Old Cowtown Museum Civil War Days Living History photos


Old Cowtown Museum is an open-air experience of the old days of Wichita. It encompasses sixty-seven old and new structures with a staff of professional and volunteer living history interpreters. Special events celebrate the Civil War, Women of the West, the Age of the Gunfighter, Rails and Trails, Victorian Christmas, and more.

The Cherokee Rifles

The Cherokee Rifles are a reenactment group from Oklahoma. They portray part of the American Indian contribution to the Confederacy. The Rifles functioned as skirmishers and raiders throughout the war.

Civil War medicine was often provided by the US Sanitary Commission. During the conflict, 44,238 Union soldiers were killed in action, 49,205 died of wounds or injuries, 186,216 died of diseases, and 24,710 died from other (or unknown) causes. There were over 1.7 million cases of diarrhea/dysentery and almost 1 million cases of malaria seen by Union Surgeons.
