Fort Larned is on the Santa Fe Trail, positioned between Fort Leavenworth,
Kansas, and Fort Lyon, Colorado. Originally founded in 1859, the existing buildings
date from about 1868 when 200 to 250 soldiers were stationed at the Fort. This
military contingent provided protection for mail coaches, freighters and other
traffic on the Santa Fe Trail. The Santa Fe Railroad completed construction
across Kansas in 1872, ending the military requirement. Fort Larned is one of the
only preserved frontier forts from this time period. It is now a National Historic Site as
