2004 Mine Creek Battlefield Reenactment
These views were captured during the 140th Anniversary Reenactment, held on private ground approximately 3 miles east of the Mine Creek Battlefield.
On October 25, 1864, 2,700 mounted Union Cavalry charged 6,000 mounted Confederate Cavalry in the culmination of a battle that had ranged over 40 miles on the Confederate retreat from Westport. The Confederates were protecting a large wagon train crossing Mine Creek on the way south. After a spirited engagement that lasted 30 minutes, the Confederates had lost 300 dead, 300 wounded and over 600 captured. The Union losses stood at 100 dead.
This battle, joining Union troops under the command of Major General Alfred Pleasonton and Confederate troops, commanded by Major General Sterling Price, was the largest Civil War battle in Kansas and the second largest cavalry battle of the entire war.
