2002 Mine Creek Benefit March
These views were captured during a fund-raising march, from Marais des Cygnes to Mine Creek to
assist the Mine Creek Foundation in acquiring more land.
The Marais des Cygnes Massacre, May 19, 1858, was an incursion of border ruffians who
abducted 11 local men, took them to the stream bed next to this site, shot them, and left them
for dead. This action contributed to the name "Bleeding Kansas".
Trading Post is a small town on the old Military Road leading to Mine Creek.
The Battle of Mine Creek was fought on October 25, 1864 between ten thousand cavalrymen. It is the only Kansas battle involving mounted cavalry from both sides.
