Trading Post, Kansas
October 25, 1864

Marais des Cygnes (Battle of Trading Post) was a preliminary to the Battle at Mine Creek. Major General Sterling Price, during the withdrawal from the Confederate incursion into Missouri, camped at Trading Post. Forces were placed across the Military Road (headed south toward Fort Scott) and on two nearby mounds. At 2:00 am on the Morning of October 25, 1864, Price began to move his troops South, leaving Major General James F. Fagan to defend. Major General Samuel R. Curtis, commanding the Union forces, launched an artillery barrage at 4:00 am. Shortly thereafter, Major General Alfred Pleasonton attacked the Confederate position, forcing them to withdraw further south toward Mine Creek.

All of the land encompassing this battle is privately owned and presently in pasture.
